A charcoal drawing with such a rich sense of tone and perspective, it is hard to believe it isn't a photo.

Jemma Appleby's drawings amplify each of her subjects simplicity and purity. The clean minimal spaces offer little information, yet carry an incredible sense of authority and magnitude.

By providing no narrative to the image, the artist uses the familiar architectural spaces to encourage the memory, knowledge and experience of human space.

Since graduating with a First Class Hons degree in 2009 Jemma Appleby has had her work exhibited extensively in London and throughout the UK, Europe and South America.

She has been selected for prestigious prizes including the Jerwood Drawing Prize, the Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition, the Griffin Art Prize, the Threadneedle Prize and the National Open Art Competition.  She has also been awarded residencies from the Royal Society of British Artists at the esteemed British School in Rome and the Chateau de Blavou Residency in association with Forum des Arts in Normandy.

Recently drawings featured in BE: The journal of The Built Environment Trust and Trebuchet, Structure & Architecture.
