Notes

Jake Tilson is an artist, graphic designer and author. He published the arts magazines Cipher (1979–1981) and Atlas (1985–1993), taught in the Communication Design department at the Royal College of Art (1987–1999) and wrote and designed the award winning cookbook A Tale of 12 Kitchens (2006). He was an early adopter of the World Wide Web as a medium for art, using his website The Cooker (1994). A retrospective exhibition of his art work was held at the Museo Internacional de Electrografia in Cuenca, Spain (1997), part funded by The British Council. He has exhibited at the Venice Architectural Biennale 2012. The Tate Gallery Collection bought a photo-work of his from the exhibition A Net of Eels in 2009.

His obsession with typography and architecture extends into his design work. Jake has designed typefaces and signage for theatres with Haworth Tompkins Architects including the RIBA Stirling Prize winning Everyman Theatre, The National Theatre and Battersea Arts Centre.

Rooted in everyday culture with a pervading sense of place, Tilson’s practice spans collage, publishing, cultural commentary, photography and audio work and often focuses on the unremarkable and the everyday whilst purposefully avoiding any sense of spectacle. His work celebrates the survival of the particular in the face of the generic.

The No.3 fan by the artists can be purchased directly from White Conduit Projects.
