Fendi Baguette, 2000s, Karl Lagerfeld/Silvia Venturini Fendi
Originally created by Silvia Venturini Fendi in 1997, the Fendi Baguette was inspired by Parisian women who would carry baguettes tucked under their arms. Compact and practical, the Baguette quickly became a classic silhouette of the 2000s. Its iconic status was further solidified by Karl Lagerfeld’s evolutions of the original design in sumptuous fabrics, beading, and leather. The Baguette was famously featured in the era-defining series Sex and the City, cementing its place as one of the most sought-after bags of the noughties.
"A bag that would make even Carrie Bradshaw, with her enviable collection of Fendi Baguettes, blush. This is a beautiful take on the iconic style, with bohemian sensibilities and intricate beading on buttery beige suede. The girls in the office were fighting over this one!"
Chanel Medallion Bag, Karl Lagerfeld, Spring/Summer 2003
As creative director of Chanel from 1983 until his death in 2019, Karl Lagerfeld is as synonymous with the brand as Coco Chanel herself. Throughout his tenure, Lagerfeld blended his aesthetic references with the house codes of Chanel. The result was a redefined Chanel that upheld its heritage whilst feeling pioneeringly modern, through design nuances that blended past and present.
"We consider ourselves to be Chanel connoisseurs, and this bag was a grail item for the longest time. So, when we finally got to see it with our own eyes, it was marvellous. We think the bag speaks for itself, really—with medallion coins featuring all the motifs of the House of Chanel."
Bulgari Bracelet, 1964, Giorgio Bulgari and his son Gianni Bulgari
Sotirios Bulgari founded his eponymous brand in 1884 after arriving in Rome from Greece. Streamlining the brand to focus solely on jewellery in 1915, the house developed into an institution which merged Italian craftsmanship with Parisian savoir faire. In the 1960s Sotirios’ son Giorgio established the distinctive design characteristics of Bulgari, creating opulent pieces defined by vibrant gemstones and unique designs. Giorgio’s direction ushered in a new era of international acclaim for Bulgari, which saw the brand itself become a symbol of the Dolce Vita.
"A composition of rubies, sapphires, diamonds and emeralds, this piece is described as one of the finest ever created by the house. It speaks to Bulgari’s extraordinary use of colour, impeccable craftsmanship and unmistakable Italian glamour."
Hermès Shoulder Birkin, 2000s, Jean Paul Gaultier
The Hermès Birkin has been considered the zenith of luxury designer bags since its creation in 1984. Upon his appointment as creative director of Hermès in 2003, Jean Paul Gaultier innovated the Birkin with the creation of the Shoulder Birkin which debuted in his 2004 runway collection. Since its inception, the Shoulder Birkin has become one of the most highly sought-after designer pieces, with this fervour intensified after iterations of the bag were spotted on the arms of Kylie Jenner and Kim Kardashian.
"We’re not ones to name-drop, but this bag did start a fight between two sisters from the world’s most famous matriarchy. Jean Paul Gaultier put his spin on the already iconic Birkin bag and made it, dare we say, even more iconic?"
Chanel XXL Flap Bag, 2019, Pharrell Williams, Capsule Collection
Designed in collaboration between Pharrell Williams and Karl Lagerfeld, the 2019 Chanel Capsule Collection bridged the brand’s signature designs with streetwear sensibilities, manifested through bold colours and oversized aesthetics. The Chanel-Pharrell partnership featured a reinterpretation of the Chanel XXL Flap Bag, taking on its slouchy style in vivid green suede. The Chanel XXL has had a resurgence in popularity following the trend of statement, oversized luggage which has swept men’s fashion since the World Cup.
"We’re in full support of the men-with-handbags agenda, and, like everyone, we loved seeing the footballers carrying their Chanel bags at this World Cup. No bag stirred up quite as much conversation as Marcus Thuram’s Chanel bag, which we actually have for sale right now."
